Dating ultrasound – less than 12 weeks

We highly recommend a dating ultrasound to accurately establish the due date of the pregnancy, check the baby’s heart rate and determine if there is more than one baby!

Dating ultrasound – less than 12 weeks

A dating ultrasound is a routine part of early pregnancy care. It accurately measures the size of the baby so a due date can be confirmed. It also provides reassurance that the pregnancy is progressing normally and that the baby's heart beat is in the normal range. Sometimes we find more than one baby - twins or triplets!

Do I need a full bladder?

If you are having a dating ultrasound, please to drink a big glass of water (about 500mls) 1 hour prior to the appointment

The baby is very small and often an internal (vaginal) ultrasound will be required to accurately measure the fetus. A vaginal ultrasound provides a “zoomed in” picture and is the most accurate way to determine the size of the baby and the due date of the pregnancy.
